Ideal For
Thinning Heritage Natural Finishes oil products, mixing custom finish blends, cleaning brushes and applicators, removing oil finish overspray, cleaning oily spots from windows and tile, degreasing wood surfaces, removing adhesive residue, and any application requiring a natural, effective solvent.
How to Use
For Thinning Oil Finishes:
- Mix 50/50 with pure tung oil or linseed oil for traditional hand-rubbed finishes
- Use to thin our Concentrated Finishing Oil or Liquid Wax based on the wood hardness
- Adjust ratio based on desired consistency and penetration
- Stir thoroughly to ensure complete blending
For Cleaning Brushes & Tools:
- Pour Pure Citrus Solvent into a clean container
- Swirl brushes or applicators in solvent to dissolve oil finish
- Squeeze out excess and repeat with fresh solvent if needed
- Once clean, wash with soap and warm water
- Reshape bristles/pads and allow to air dry completely
For Removing Overspray & Oily Spots:
- Apply Pure Citrus Solvent to a clean cloth
- Wipe affected area (windows, tile, countertops, etc.)
- Repeat as needed until oil is removed
- Any remaining solvent will simply evaporate cleanly
- For stubborn spots, allow solvent to sit for 1-2 minutes before wiping
For General Cleaning: Use on wood surfaces, tools, or equipment to remove oil, grease, and adhesive residue. Apply with cloth, allow to work, then wipe clean.
Alternative Cleaning Methods
While Pure Citrus Solvent is our recommended cleaner, you can also use other solvents such as turpentine or mineral spirits. In certain situations, lots of soap, water, and elbow grease will also work, though it requires more effort.
Safety Information
IMPORTANT: While Pure Citrus Solvent is safer than petroleum-based solvents, it is still a solvent and requires proper safety precautions.
Personal Protection:
- Always wear gloves when working with solvents to protect skin
- Always wear eye protection to prevent eye contact
- Wear a respirator if sensitive to vapors or working in enclosed spaces
- Minimize breathing vapors and exposure
- Avoid prolonged skin contact
Ventilation: Use in well-ventilated areas. Solvent vapors can be harsh even though citrus solvent is milder than petroleum-based alternatives. Open windows and use fans to ensure good air circulation.
Fire Safety:
- Combustible liquid - keep away from heat, sparks, and open flames
- Store in cool, dry place away from heat sources
- Keep container tightly closed when not in use
Rag Disposal: Immediately after use, place rags in water or lay flat outdoors in a well-ventilated area away from buildings to dry completely before putting them in the trash.
Important Notes About Oil-Soaked Clothing
If you get oil finishes on your clothes, those clothes must be dedicated as work clothes forever. Do NOT run oil-soaked clothing through the washer and dryer as this creates a fire hazard. Either dispose of heavily soiled clothing properly or designate them as permanent work wear.
Solvent Reuse & Disposal
Reusing Solvent: Allow used solvent to settle in a sealed container. Oil residue will sink to the bottom. Carefully decant the clean solvent from the top for reuse.
Disposal: Dispose of contaminated solvent according to local hazardous waste regulations. Do not pour down drains or into the environment.

Why Choose Pure Citrus Solvent
Pure Citrus Solvent is the natural choice for health-conscious woodworkers and finishers. Unlike petroleum-based solvents derived from fossil fuels, our citrus solvent comes from renewable resources and is much safer to use. It's the same food-grade orange oil we use in all our Heritage Natural Finishes products, ensuring compatibility and quality. The pleasant citrus scent makes it far more enjoyable to work with than harsh-smelling mineral spirits or turpentine.
Environmental Benefits
As a 100% bio-based product derived from citrus peels (often a waste product of juice production), Pure Citrus Solvent represents a sustainable alternative to petroleum solvents. It's biodegradable, renewable, and has a significantly lower environmental impact than traditional solvents.
Sold in the following sizes: 4oz glass bottles, quarts, 1 gallon, 3.5 gallons, 5 gallons and 55 gallon drums
Composition
We disclose ALL ingredients that we use. Heritage Natural Finishes contain NO petroleum products, or metallic drying agents whatsoever! We use only the highest quality ingredients from the most sustainable sources possible. What you see here is what you get. If you have any questions, you can always call us!
Tung Oil
100% pure with no additives. This is the highest quality tung oil available; drying harder and forming a more durable finish than linseed oil alone. Both oils are dryer-free and slightly heat-treated (polymerized).
Special Aged Linseed Oil
Obtained from flax grown in the Red River Valley of the U.S. and Canada. It is purified and refined by natural oxidation and blowing, and dries as clear or clearer than tung oil, with none of the characteristic discoloration that is typical of hardware store varieties. No other finishing oil penetrates as deeply into wood.
Beeswax
Only filtered, chemical and bleach-free white beeswax wax is used. Beeswax adds visual depth of grain, smoothness, and elastic durability. Beeswax forms a skim coat that keeps the finish on the wood, slowing the evaporation of the solvent, which gives the oils more time for absorption.
Pure Citrus Solvent
This is the purest form of citrus turpenes (solvent), extracted from cold-pressed orange peel oil. This is the only solvent used in our finishes, and is also sold separately for thinning product or cleaning up. Pure Citrus Solvent is a safer alternative to mineral spirits, and other harsh solvents and can be used the same way.
Pine Rosin
Gum rosin extracted from pine sap and separated from the turpentine. This is the gum rosin found in heart pine, giving the wood its hardness and durability. We use only top grade, crystal-free, water-white rosin. No synthetic resins are used.
