Important Notes About Pine Wood

Pine Species Considerations: Pine wood does not work well for interior applications with this product. However, pine works very well when left in the sun and rain for a few weeks to mature the patina.

For Interior Pine Projects: Pine boards intended for interior use must be left outside in sun and rain until the desired patina look is achieved, then brought inside for installation.

How the Patina Develops

Pioneer Wood Patina is not a paint or stain that provides instant color. It's a true patina treatment that reacts with the wood and matures over time. The brown/grey appearance develops gradually over a few weeks, especially when exposed to sunlight and moisture. This creates an authentic, natural-looking aged appearance that cannot be replicated with stains or paints.

Application Precautions

May Stain: Pioneer Wood Patina may stain hands, clothes, and other building materials such as stucco, concrete, window frames, and surrounding surfaces.

Protection Recommendations:

  • Wear gloves and old clothing during application
  • Protect adjacent surfaces with drop cloths or plastic sheeting
  • Mask off areas you don't want treated
  • Clean up drips and overspray immediately with soap and water

Cleanup & Storage

Cleanup: Use soap and water to clean brushes, rollers, sprayers, and any affected surfaces immediately after use.

Storage:

  • Store powder concentrate in an air-tight container - indefinite shelf life
  • Store pre-mixed solution in an air-tight container - minimum 5 year shelf life
  • Keep in cool, dry place away from extreme temperatures
  • Label containers clearly with contents and mixing date

Top Coating Options

Once the Pioneer Wood Patina has dried and matured, you can enhance and protect the finish with Heritage Natural Finishes products:

  • Exterior Finish: For outdoor applications requiring UV and weather protection
  • Deck Oil: For horizontal surfaces like decks and outdoor furniture
  • Original Finish: For interior applications (after pine has matured outdoors)
