Ideal For

Custom coloring Heritage Natural Finishes products, creating unique wood stain colors, tinting furniture finishes, artistic wood finishing, restoration projects requiring color matching, decorative painting on wood, and any application where custom color is desired in natural oil finishes.

Compatible Products

Mixol works beautifully with all Heritage Natural Finishes including Original Finish, Exterior Finish, Deck Oil, Pure Tung Oil, Tung Oil Finish, Concentrated Finishing Oil, BeesBlock Oil, and custom oil blends. Also compatible with other oil-based finishes, varnishes, and wood treatments.

How to Use

Mixing Instructions:

  1. Shake Mixol bottle thoroughly before use
  2. Start with small amounts - add 2-3 drops per ounce of finish
  3. Stir thoroughly to ensure even color distribution
  4. Test on scrap wood to verify color before applying to project
  5. Add more Mixol gradually until desired color is achieved
  6. Keep track of ratios for consistent color in future batches

Color Intensity: The amount of Mixol you add determines color intensity. Start light and build up gradually - it's easier to add more color than to lighten an over-tinted finish.

Creating Custom Colors

Mixol pigments are fully intermixable, allowing you to create unlimited custom colors:

  • Mix earth tones for natural wood stains
  • Blend complementary colors for unique shades
  • Adjust warmth or coolness by adding small amounts of contrasting colors
  • Create weathered or aged wood appearances
  • Match existing finishes for restoration work

Application Tips

  • Always test color on scrap wood of the same species as your project
  • Wood species affects final color - test before committing
  • Mix enough tinted finish for entire project to ensure color consistency
  • Stir tinted finish periodically during application to prevent settling
  • Apply tinted finish using same techniques as untinted finish
  • Multiple coats will deepen color intensity
  • For mixing larger quantities, we recommend mixing colors in the 1 gallon size versus trying to tint a full 5 gallon bucket worth.
  • Example on intensity: A ratio of 1 part Mixol to 12 parts HNF oils is a very dark color! So for a lighter "stain" look, use more Oil to dilute your Mixol

Available Colors

Mixol Oxide pigments are available in a range of earth tones and classic colors including browns, reds, yellows, blacks, and more. Each color is highly concentrated and lightfast for professional results.

TINTING YOUR OILS WITH MIXOL OXIDE PIGMENTS

You can add long lasting, beautiful color to any of our finishes.

We carry Mixol Oxide universal pigments for sale to meet both your color and oil needs! Mixol brand pigments are the highest quality Universal Tints on the market today. They have been produced in Germany for more than 35 years and are highly compatible with all the Heritage Natural Finishes products. They are easy to use, just add the color right to the oil, shake well and apply. We love them and think you will too!

Mixols are known for their high concentration of pigment, sophisticated color palette, and ease of mixing. They are highly resistant to frost and heat damage, which makes them ideal for adding to our finishes for exterior applications specifically. They have an indefinite shelf life- they will not dry out or thicken, because they are binder-free. The oxide-based colors are made from inorganic pigments which make them colorfast, fade-resistant and weatherproof which make them ideal for exterior applications or where UV fading may occur. Mixol tints are not flammable or hazardous. We offer the oxide tints in three sizes: small 20ml test sizes, along with 200ml and 500ml bottles. We carry a couple of colors in the largest 5kg size.

APPLICATION:

To add Mixol Oxide pigments to our finishes, simply add the pigment at your desired intensity directly into our oils and mix well before use and as you continue to use it, as the solids can tend to migrate to the bottom as you work. Be sure to keep track of the ratio of tint to oil, so you can more accurately duplicate your ratio to make larger amounts. These are very concentrated colors, so a little goes a long way. The ratio where the concentration is strong but you can still see wood grain is about 200ml of Mixol added to 1 gallon of Heritage Oil Products. This gives you the strongest color before acting like paint. Thin out as needed for a lighter color. Apply tinted oil liberally on the surface, allow to soak in and wipe down lightly with a cotton cloth. Apply two coats for best results. The surface will dry to a classic rich matte sheen. The Mixol Oxide tints are the richest and highest quality we’ve found, so I think you’ll be impressed and love the expanded color options while still working with our natural oil finishes. Feel free to contact us for more information.

Mixol makes 3 sizes of bottles and here is the conversion from ml to fluid ounces for easier measuring: 20ml = 0.68oz, 200ml = 6.76 oz, 500ml = 16.0 oz

COVERAGE:

About 400 sq. ft. per gallon in our Original or Exterior Finish on the first coat. Nearly double on the second. Depending on the species of wood you are finishing. Always do a test first to be sure you like the color and it’s penetrating well.

CLEAN UP:

Cleanup of the Mixol pigments is very easy, just use soap and water for pure pigment . Once the Mixol is mixed into the oil, use Pure Citrus Solvent or other solvent for clean up on hard surfaces or brushes.
