LEED Finish - Custom Blended for LEED Compliance

Custom-formulated natural oil finish specifically designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System standards. Our LEED Finish falls just below the 350 g/L VOC requirement for clear wood finishes, making it perfect for projects seeking LEED certification.

Key Features & Benefits

  • LEED Compliant: Meets EQ Credit 4.2: Low-Emitting Materials: Paints & Coatings standards
  • VOC Level: Below 350 g/L threshold for clear wood finishes/varnish category
  • 100% Bio-Based: Made entirely from natural, renewable resources
  • Food Safe: Safe for food-contact surfaces once fully dry
  • Natural Citrus Solvent: Uses safer d-limonene instead of harmful petroleum solvents
  • Custom Blended: Made to order in sizes from 1 gallon to 55-gallon drums
  • Easy Application: More solvent than Concentrated Oil for easier penetration
  • Matte Finish: Dries to a beautiful natural matte sheen
  • Documentation Available: Certificate of testing provided for LEED project compliance
  • Made in USA: Quality-controlled production by Heritage Natural Finishes

What is LEED?

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings. The LEED rating system awards points for categories including Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, and Indoor Environmental Quality, among others. By following LEED standards, buildings can achieve certification levels of LEED Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

LEED Compliance Details

Our LEED Finish fits into the EQ Credit 4.2: Low-Emitting Materials: Paints & Coatings category. Specifically, it falls into the clear wood finishes/varnish category, which allows for 350 g/L VOC content maximum. Our LEED Finish is formulated to fall just below this 350 g/L threshold.

VOC Levels of Heritage Natural Finishes:

  • BeesBlock Oil, Pure Tung Oil, & Pure Linseed Oil: Zero VOC
  • Concentrated Finishing Oil: 198.8 g/L
  • Liquid Wax End Sealer: 212.5 g/L
  • LEED Finish: Below 350 g/L (LEED compliant)
  • Original & Exterior Finish: 405.45 g/L

Custom Formulation

Our LEED Finish is custom blended to provide the perfect balance between LEED compliance and performance. It contains more solvent than our Concentrated Finishing Oil for easier oil penetration and application, but less than our Original or Exterior Finishes to keep it below the required VOC level. This makes it ideal for LEED projects that require both compliance and professional results.

Not All VOCs Are Created Equal

The intent behind indoor air quality requirements is to protect building occupants from breathing harmful compounds. Many VOCs used in various products, even some "green" products, are indeed quite harmful (such as benzene or formaldehyde). However, the Pure Citrus Solvent (d-limonene) we use is significantly safer. While it is a powerful compound that needs to be respected and used with proper ventilation, it does not carry the health complications normally associated with traditional petroleum-based solvents.

Ideal For

LEED-certified building projects, green building construction, sustainable interior finishing, commercial buildings seeking LEED points, residential projects with green building goals, furniture for LEED spaces, cabinetry and millwork in certified buildings, and any wood finishing project requiring VOC compliance documentation.

Application Instructions

Preparation:

  • Wood must be clean, dry, and bare (no previous finish)
  • Sand to 150-220 grit for optimal results
  • Remove all sanding dust with tack cloth or vacuum
  • Work in well-ventilated area

Application Steps:

  1. Apply liberally with brush, cloth, or applicator pad
  2. Allow oil to penetrate for 15-20 minutes
  3. Wipe off ALL excess oil with clean, lint-free cloths
  4. Allow 24 hours drying time between coats
  5. Apply 2-4 coats for optimal protection and appearance
  6. Allow 7-10 days for complete cure

HERITAGE NATURAL FINISHES and LEED

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System* is a third-party certification program and is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.

The LEED rating system uses points for things like Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, and Indoor Environmental Quality, among many others. By following the LEED standards, you can get more and more points for your building, resulting in a higher LEED certification. The certification levels are Leed Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

Our finishes fit into the EQ Credit 4.2: Low-Emitting Materials: Paints & Coatings category. Click here to view the standards on page 67 of their pdf. Our finishes fall into the Clear wood finishes varnish category, which allow for 350 g/L VOC content.

* If you need a certificate of testing for our "LEED Finish" for compliance on a LEED project, let us know and we can send you our latest certificate and documentation. Email us at info@heritagenaturalfinishes.com

The VOC levels of our finishes are listed below:

BeesBlock Oil, Pure Tung Oil, & Pure Linseed Oil -- Zero VOC

Concentrated Finishing Oil -- 198.8 g/L

Liquid Wax End Sealer-- 212.5 g/L

Original & Exterior Finish -- 405.45 g/L

*We do make a custom-order finish that we, for lack of a better name, call our "LEED Finish" that falls just below the 350 g/L mark. It has more solvent than our Concentrated Oil for easier oil penetration but less than our Original or Exterior Finishes to make it below the required VOC level. We can custom blend this for you in sizes from one gallon up to the 55 gallon drum size (no quarts).

As a note, not all VOC's are created equal (see more in a cool techy article below). The intent behind the indoor air quality question is to protect ourselves from breathing too many harmful compounds. Many VOC's used in a variety of products out there, even 'Green' products, are indeed quite harmful. Others, such as the Citrus Solvent we use, are not (unless with excessive exposure). While it is a powerful compound, and needs to be respected as such, there are none of the complications normally associated with more traditional solvents such as Benzene or Formaldehyde.

Using Heritage Natural Finishes can be one piece of the puzzle for helping you achieve a higher rating in the LEED system. We are not LEED experts, but if we can help answer any questions, please don't hesitate to call us at 541-844-8748.
