Ideal For

Exterior decks, outdoor furniture, horizontal wood surfaces, log homes and timbers, pergolas and arbors, outdoor stairs and railings, wood siding, fences, and any exterior wood project requiring deep penetrating protection without a waxy surface finish.

Coverage

250-300 square feet per gallon on first coat (slightly less than regular Exterior Finish due to absence of beeswax). Subsequent coats will cover more area as wood becomes saturated.

Application Instructions - CRITICAL FOR SUCCESS

IMPORTANT: Proper application technique is essential for decks. Over-application and inadequate wiping are the most common mistakes. Always apply thin coats and wipe thoroughly.

Preparation:

  1. Wood must be clean, dry, and free of previous finishes, dirt, and mildew
  2. New wood: Sand to 80-120 grit for optimal penetration
  3. Weathered wood: Clean thoroughly and allow to dry completely (2-3 days minimum)
  4. Test in an inconspicuous area first
  5. Work in temperatures between 50-90°F, avoiding direct sunlight

Application Steps:

  1. Apply Thin Coats: Use a brush, roller, or lambswool applicator to apply a THIN, even coat
  2. Work in Sections: Apply to manageable 4x8 foot sections to ensure proper wiping time
  3. Allow Penetration: Let oil penetrate for 10-20 minutes
  4. WIPE THOROUGHLY: This is the most critical step - wipe off ALL excess oil with clean, lint-free cloths until surface feels dry to the touch
  5. Check for Puddles: Inspect for any pooling or excess oil and wipe again if needed
  6. Wait Between Coats: Allow 24-48 hours between coats for proper curing
  7. Apply 2-3 Coats: Build protection with multiple thin coats, wiping thoroughly after each

Why Thin Coats & Thorough Wiping Matter

Over-application problems: Excess oil that isn't wiped off will remain sticky, attract dirt, create uneven appearance, and may never fully cure on horizontal surfaces exposed to foot traffic.

Proper technique benefits: Thin coats penetrate deeply, cure properly, create even appearance, resist dirt pickup, and provide long-lasting protection. Remember: the oil works by penetrating INTO the wood, not by sitting ON TOP of it.

Unique Requirements for Decks

Decks present special challenges compared to vertical surfaces:

  • Horizontal surfaces hold more oil: Gravity doesn't help excess drain away, making thorough wiping essential
  • Foot traffic exposure: Uncured oil will track into your home and attract dirt
  • Weather exposure: Rain can cause problems with improperly wiped surfaces
  • Direct sunlight: Can cause oil to cure too quickly or remain tacky if over-applied

Deck-Specific Tips:

  • Work early morning or late afternoon to avoid direct sun
  • Keep foot traffic off deck for 48-72 hours after final coat
  • Check weather forecast - avoid application if rain expected within 48 hours
  • Pay extra attention to wiping between deck boards where oil can pool
  • Use multiple clean rags - switch to fresh rags frequently during wiping

Maintenance & Reapplication

Annual Maintenance: Reapply one thin coat annually or as needed when water no longer beads on surface. Clean deck thoroughly before reapplication.

High Traffic Areas: May require more frequent touch-ups. Apply thin coat and wipe thoroughly.

Cleaning: Clean deck with mild soap and water or a vinegar solution if molds and mildews are an issue in your area. Allow to dry completely (2-3 days) before reapplying oil.

Why Choose Deck Oil Over Regular Exterior Finish

While our regular Exterior Finish contains beeswax for added water resistance and sheen, Deck Oil omits the wax for faster penetration and reduced surface tackiness on horizontal surfaces. This makes it ideal for decks and high-traffic areas where a non-waxy surface is preferred. The formula still provides excellent UV protection and weather resistance through deep oil penetration.

*This product would be a great choice for high production situations in a wood shop where you need to apply a coat and stack pretty quickly.

Professional Results

Heritage Natural Finishes Deck Oil is trusted by professional deck builders, log home specialists, and timber framers for its reliable performance and natural protection. When applied correctly with thin coats and thorough wiping, it delivers beautiful, long-lasting results that enhance and protect exterior wood for years to come.

Deck Oil

This is our traditional Exterior Finish blend but without the added beeswax for quicker absorption, less tack left on the surface so fewer boot print marks while it dries. This is a great option for all exterior horizontal surface finishing, on decks and roof decking. You can also use this as an oil primer for all log and timber work in the shop. It soaks in quicker and easier to handle and stack in a production situation.

Coverage:

Approx. 350 square feet per gallon or 500 board feet per gallon; rough-sawn materials tend to absorb more. You get less coverage on the first coat and more on the second. You also get more coverage on harder wood species versus softer species like pine. How wet the wood is will also vary the coverage numbers as well.

Clean Up:

For spills, over spray, or to clean up brushes, use our Pure Citrus Solvent or other solvent (Turpentine, Mineral Spirits, etc.).

*For additional protection against insects, consider treating all wood with a borate solution before oiling.
