Finishing Exterior Wood with Natural Penetrating Oil

Siding, exposed timbers, log work, and the reasoning behind each step

Exterior wood has a harder life than anything inside a building, and it fails in ways interior wood never does. Understanding why makes every choice below make sense, including the ones that seem counterintuitive.

We recommend our Exterior Finish for outside siding, decks, exposed timbers, and log work. It is easy to apply, easy to repair, easy to maintain, and it does not flake or crack the way film forming products do. It works especially well on dense hardwoods such as Black Locust and Ipe, which are chosen for outdoor durability in the first place, and equally well on softer species like Western Red Cedar and Douglas fir.

What exterior wood is actually up against

Four things are working on your siding at once, and they compound.

Ultraviolet light breaks down lignin. Lignin is the natural polymer binding wood fibers together. UV degrades it at the surface, rain washes the degraded material away, and what remains is loose cellulose fiber that scatters light. That is the silver gray of weathered wood. Left long enough the loosened fibers erode entirely, the surface roughens, and checking follows.

Moisture cycles constantly. Wood takes on and gives up moisture with every change in humidity and every rain. Each cycle means dimensional movement, and movement at the surface is what opens checks and lifts grain.

Mildew and fungi colonize damp wood. Wood decay fungi need sustained moisture above roughly 20 percent moisture content to establish. Surface mildew needs less. Both prefer wood that cannot dry.

Temperature swings are extreme. A south facing timber can be blistering at four in the afternoon and near freezing before dawn. Everything expands and contracts with it.

Why film finishes fail out here

A film forming finish cures into a continuous membrane on top of the wood. Under the conditions above, that membrane and the wood underneath move at different rates until something cracks. Water enters the crack, gets beneath the film, and the film then holds it against the wood rather than shedding it. The result is peeling, blistering, and trapped moisture, and the only honest repair is stripping the whole surface back to bare wood.

A penetrating oil has no film to break. It cures inside the cell structure rather than bridging over it. It cannot delaminate, because there is nothing to delaminate from. It fails gradually and evenly: the oil oxidizes and thins, water stops beading, color fades. That is a maintenance signal, not a failure, and the response is a wash and another coat.

Just as importantly, an oiled surface stays permeable. Exterior wood is going to get wet. What determines whether it lasts is whether it can dry again afterward, and a low permeability film is what stops it from doing so.

What is in Exterior Finish, and what each part does

Exterior Finish is our penetrating oil and resin formula with two additives that matter only outdoors.

The oils and resin are the finish itself. They penetrate the cell structure, cure in place, and leave the wood water shedding but still permeable.

A UV blocker slows the lignin breakdown described above. It is the reason exterior wood holds its color for years rather than months.

A mildewcide resists fungus and mildew growth at the surface.

Beeswax stays near the surface as the solvent flashes off, which slows evaporation, gives the oils more time to absorb, and adds water repellency and sheen. This is the difference between Exterior Finish and our Deck Oil, which is the same formula with the wax left out for faster penetration on horizontal surfaces. On vertical work the wax is an advantage. On a deck it can hold a slight tack that collects dirt and footprints. Choose by orientation, not by product name.

The finish is clear and dries to a matte sheen, so the wood looks like wood rather than like a coating.

Preparation

The wood should be bare, clean, and untreated. Oil cannot penetrate through dirt, mildew, existing film finishes, or as deeply on a burnished surface.

It does not need to be seasoned. See the section below on green wood, which is one of the things this finish is specifically built for.

Mill glaze. Freshly planed lumber, particularly cedar siding, often carries a compressed, burnished surface left by planer knives. It resists penetration. A light sanding breaks it and lets the oil in. If your test patch beads the finish rather than absorbing it, mill glaze is usually why.

Borate pretreatment. For log homes, high mildew climates, or anywhere insects and sap stain are a concern, treat with a borate salt solution before oiling. Borates give protection against mold, insects, and sap stain that no finish provides, and applying them is far easier before the oil goes on than after.

Always test first. Do a small patch on the actual wood and let it sit. You are checking two things: that you like the color, and that the oil is genuinely soaking in rather than sitting on top. Species vary enormously, and Ipe behaves nothing like cedar.

Surface water is different from green. A high internal moisture content is fine. Standing water on the surface is not. Let rain dry off, and let a washed surface dry out, before you start. What you are avoiding is a wet film between the oil and the wood, not moisture inside the wood itself.

Green wood is not a problem. It is the point.

Most exterior finishes tell you to wait until the wood is seasoned. Ours does not, and the reason comes down to what is deliberately left out of the formula.

Conventional oil finishes contain metallic driers, catalysts that speed the oxidation reaction so the finish sets quickly. Fast setting is convenient on dry wood and actively harmful on green wood, because the surface skins over before the oil has worked its way in. You end up with a comparatively impermeable layer sitting on top of a timber that still has a great deal of water to give up. The moisture has to leave anyway, so it leaves through whatever route it can find, and the finish can blush, blister, or lift.

We add no driers. Our finish cures slowly by natural oxidation, which means it keeps penetrating instead of skinning, and it stays permeable while the wood does its work. Green timber can go on giving up moisture through a finished surface rather than being sealed against it.

That permeability is what makes the finish useful rather than merely tolerable on green wood. Checking is driven by the difference between a dry outer shell and a still saturated core. Slow the surface down, keep the shell closer to the core's dimension, and the tension stays below the point where the wood tears. An oiled green timber loses its water more slowly and more evenly, and it checks less as a result.

Two practical notes. Green timber absorbs noticeably less finish than dry timber, so a first coat on green wood covers more area than you might expect. And the finish will take longer to cure on green wood than on seasoned wood, which is normal and not a defect.

Application

Shake or stir well before use, especially if the container has been sitting.

Conditions. Avoid direct sunlight and hot surfaces. When the wood is hot the solvent flashes off before the oils can absorb, which leaves glossy patches where the finish sat on the surface instead of going in. Avoid rain. Early morning, late afternoon, and overcast days are ideal.

There is no minimum application temperature. In cold weather the oil simply penetrates and dries more slowly. Apply thinner coats, give them longer to absorb, and allow an extra day between coats.

Tools. A real lambswool applicator, a pump-up or airless sprayer, a good oil brush, or a cotton rag. All work. Sprayers are efficient on large log and siding surfaces, but you still need to go back with a rag or pad to work the finish in and take off the excess.

Fill the checks. On logs and timbers, work the finish into every check and crack. Checks are open end grain running into the heart of the piece, and they are the fastest drying route the wood has. Filling them slows moisture loss where it moves quickest.

Wet on wet. Coats do not need to dry between applications. Apply only as much finish as the wood will absorb in a day, then buff off any excess or pooled oil. Excess left standing will stay tacky and dry glossy in patches. For a log or timber frame exterior, two to four wet on wet coats depending on how thirsty the wood is.

Curing. The surface should feel dry to the touch within the first week. Final curing and hardening takes three to four weeks.

Coverage. Approximately 350 square feet per gallon on the first coat. Rough sawn takes considerably more than planed. Softer species take more than dense ones. Dry timber takes considerably more than green. Later coats go further as the wood approaches saturation. Overestimate when ordering. We are glad to send a sample so you can test before committing to a quantity.

Maintenance

This is where a penetrating oil earns back its cost. There is no stripping and no sanding. Clean the surface and apply another coat.

Let the wood tell you when. Flick water on it. If it beads, you are fine. If it soaks in, or if the color has begun to fade, it is time. In practice that means re-coating as often as annually where the wood is showing fade, meaning hard south and west exposures and anywhere direct water hits, and typically every two to three years on protected elevations.

Exposure varies so much between a south gable and a covered porch that a calendar interval would be wrong for most of your building. The water test takes five seconds and is right every time.

Service life of the additives. UV protection runs about five years on a fully exposed south elevation. The mildewcide stays active for roughly two years. Regular maintenance coats renew both.

Repairs. Rub finish into abrasions, scuffs, and scratches with an abrasive pad, then buff out. Because there is no film edge to feather, there is no witness line. Our finishes also avoid the air bubbles and lap marks that plague film products, so touch ups blend rather than announce themselves.

What Exterior Finish will not do

It will not stop graying permanently. The UV blocker slows lignin breakdown substantially. Nothing stops it. Fully exposed wood will lighten over years, and maintenance coats are what keep the color rich.

It will not prevent checking. Filling checks slows drying through the fastest route the wood has, and that genuinely reduces how much further checking you get. It does not eliminate it. Green timber is going to check somewhere, and a boxed heart timber will open up no matter what you put on it. Any product claiming to prevent checking in freshly sawn material is overselling.

It is not a preservative or an insecticide. The mildewcide resists surface growth. It does not protect against decay fungi in persistently wet wood, carpenter bees, or sap stain. That is what borate treatment is for, and it goes on first.

It will not fix damaged wood. Rotted, cupped, and split boards need replacing before anything gets finished.

It cannot work through a barrier. Old paint, varnish, deck stain, mill glaze, dirt, or mildew all have to come off first. Oil applied over any of them will fail early, and it will not be the oil's fault.

Safety: oily rags will start a fire

Natural drying oils generate heat as they polymerize. That reaction is what hardens the finish inside the wood, and it does not care whether it is happening in a timber or in a wad of cloth. A pile of oil soaked rags insulates its own heat, the temperature climbs, and the pile can ignite with no spark and no flame nearby. This is the leading cause of shop and garage fires attributed to finishing products.

Exterior jobs generate a lot of rags in a hurry, so make this a habit rather than an afterthought:

  • Lay used rags flat and separated on a non combustible surface outdoors until stiff and fully dry, or
  • Submerge them in water in a sealed metal container, or
  • Use a listed oily waste can

Never leave them heaped in a bucket, a trash bag, or the corner of a garage, and never in a pocket. Thirty seconds, every time.

Cleanup

Pure Citrus Solvent for spills, overspray, and brushes. Turpentine or mineral spirits also work.

The long view

Exterior wood is not a surface you finish once. It is a relationship you maintain, and the only real question is whether maintenance means an afternoon with a lambswool applicator or a weekend with a scraper. Keeping the wood oiled is the best protection available, and it lets siding, timbers, and logs age with beauty rather than simply weather.
